Rev. Tom Dunbar Retires After 13 Years of Ministry in Mitchell Main Street United Church bids farewell to a beloved minister whose impact will long be remembered.
After 13 years of faithful leadership, Reverend Tom Dunbar is retiring from his role as minister of Main Street United Church in Mitchell, Ontario.
Rev. Dunbar first stepped into the pulpit at Main Street United on August 12, 2012. From that day forward, he became more than a minister to his congregation—he became a trusted spiritual guide, a compassionate listener, and a valued friend.
Residing on a small horse farm just outside Seaforth with his family, Rev. Dunbar has always brought a grounded and heartfelt approach to his ministry. His sermons are remembered not just for their message, but for their warmth and relatability. He is known for offering support and encouragement in meaningful, often personal ways, connecting with people in both times of celebration and sorrow.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rev. Dunbar led with adaptability and care. In May of 2020, he initiated a community food drive to help those in need—a program that has continued to thrive for five years and is set to carry on beyond his retirement. He also introduced online services during the pandemic, ensuring that the church remained a source of comfort and connection when gathering in person wasn’t possible.
Rev. Dunbar’s attention to detail and genuine compassion have shone particularly bright during life’s most significant moments. Whether presiding over a baptism, wedding, or funeral, he ensured each service was never generic, but rather deeply personal and unique to the individuals and families involved.
As Rev. Dunbar enters retirement, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication, innovation, and heartfelt ministry. The congregation at Main Street United Church expresses deep gratitude for his years of service and wishes him well as he begins this next chapter.
